Reflections
Nativity will be celebrating two “Homecomings” this month.
First, the Rev. Deacon Tina Frizzell will be our officiant for Morning Prayer and preacher at the 10:30am service this Sunday, October 15. After being wonderfully trained as a seminarian at Nativity most of last year, Tina was assigned by Bishop Seage to work, primarily, at St. Peter’s, Oxford. Though Tina continues to stay connected to Nativity (among other things, she prepares the Prayer List for Sunday worship), this will be her first face-to-face time back among us in several months. Welcome back, Tina!
Secondly, after an extended medical leave, the Rev. Ann Whitaker will return to her monthly rotation at Nativity as celebrant and preacher on Sunday, October 22. Her warm, gentle spiritual presence has been missed, and it is with great joy that we greet her return. Welcome home, Ann!
Tina will lead our Bible Study of the Gospel of John at 9:30am on October 15, and Ann will do the same on October 22.
Kathy and I will be at a large family gathering in Tennessee this Sunday. I will be working with my South Carolina clergy clients the week of October 22 and preaching at St. John’s, Charleston, that Sunday. We will miss you, but know that you are in good hands!
Mission Committee Report
At its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 10, the Nativity Mission Committee:
-Heard a very positive financial report from our treasurer, Robbie Fisher;
-Established a “Vicar’s Discretionary Fund” to be used for outreach purposes;
-Heard an update on the progress of the handicap ramp, and expressed deep appreciation to Les Nichols for his work on this project and for his generous donation that will fund its construction;
- Approved the Vicar’s pastoral care proposal to train and license Lay Eucharistic Visitors to take the Reserved Sacrament after worship on Sundays to those unable to participate in Sunday services;
-Heard an encouraging report on the Yard Sale in support of the Salt and Light Building. Almost $900 was raised for furnishings. This will become an annual event for both the city and Nativity;
-Formally approved the renewal of licenses for our Lay Eucharistic Ministers.
Dawn Denman to Read at TIN, Friday, October 13 @ 6:30 pm
Nativity’s own Dawn Denman will be reading from some of her original writings this Friday at TIN (116 South Main). This is a part of TIN’s “Woven” series that highlights and celebrates local artists.
Art Crawl- Saturday, October 14
The annual Water Valley Art Crawl will be held this Saturday. If you are participating, plan to come by the Salt and Light Building to view the art that will be displayed there and serve as an “informal” host to those visitors who may be encountering this special Nativity community for the first time.
Salt and Light Building Update
A successful yard sale raised almost $900 for furnishings. In the meantime, a very attractive exterior sign has been installed identifying the building (thanks James McCormick!). The new flooring in the back entrance, and soon to be kitchen, will be completed within the next two weeks. This will allow a sink and storage shelves to be installed. Great progress!
Vicar’s Discretionary Fund Established by Mission Committee
This fund will be used to respond to ad hoc and acute needs of the Water Valley and Yalobusha County community. The fund has been initially funded by a generous one time gift, but its ongoing support will be through the non-designated, “loose offering” on the first Sunday of each month. The Mission Committee believes that we have sufficient financial stability to divert these funds once a month. It is also hoped that such a regular monthly designation will encourage additional contributions!
Altar Flowers Donations Needed!
The following dates are available for contributions of flowers for the altar for our Sunday worship:
October 29
November 5 (All Saints Sunday)
November 12
November 26
December 3
December 10
The donation of flowers is a wonderful way to remember someone special to you or to give thanks for an anniversary, birthday or other special event. A sign up sheet for donations is located in the table in the back of the church.
Blessings and Peace,
Duncan
